Year 6 Dodgeball Team - National Champions 2023

Last summer, our Year 6 dodgeball team made the front page of the Chronicle, after winning British Dodgeball’s Primary Schools National Championship.  The pressure was on for this year’s team to defend the our title and repeat last year’s success.  The team is managed by the school’s inspirational sports coach, Miss Lindsay.  We won the county finals again and then their regional tournament, to secure a place in the national finals for the second year. The team had to arrive at school at 6.00am on the day of the finals, to drive up to Felton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke.  There were 15 teams in the finals.  Over 200 teams had taken part at the county stage.  At the finals, the team handled the pressure through a group stage and then quarter-final, semi-final and final matches.  Lawford Mead were crowned national champions once again!

It wasn’t just team success on the day.  British Dodgeball also had a speed gun at the event and they held a contest to see who could throw a dodgeball the fastest.  The winners were two pupils from Lawford Mead and they each won a dodgeball goody bag. One of them threw his dodgeball at 63mph!  On the way back to Chelmsford that evening, he pointed out to Miss Lindsay that he could throw a dodgeball faster than the max speed of the minibus she was driving!
